Polaris Industries Inc.will cease manufacturing operations at a large plant in Milford, Iowa, and re purpose the facility as a warehouse for the company’s Spirit Lake, Iowa, plant that manufactures Indian motorcycles.
The move impacts 330 jobs at the plant, but a couple of dozen employees could transfer to the nearby Spirit Lake plant or to other Polaris facilities, the total number of layoffs could be about 275 to 300. Medina, Minn.-based Polaris (NYSE: PII) is moving the Milford plant production of Slingshot motorbikes and off-road vehicles to plants in Huntsville, Ala.; Roseau, Minn.; and Anaheim, Calif.
The company announced earlier this year that it will wind down its Victory motorcycle brand and focus its efforts on growing the vintage Indian brand, which the company has positioned as a competitor to Milwaukee-based U.S. motorcycle market leader Harley-Davidson Inc. (NYSE: HOG). Polaris said it is making investments to enhance its Spirit Lake Indian motorcycle plant, including a new experience center, upgraded employee facilities and additional office space.
