Just how many bikers might be coming to the 77th Sturgis motorcycle rally?
That’s anybody’s guess, but the answer will start rumbling en masse into the Black Hills in just a few days.
Nobody expects this year’s rally throng to come anywhere close to that of the milestone 75th rally in 2015, when an estimated 739,000 visitors jammed Sturgis and the Black Hills region.
Instead, estimates vary from numbers comparable to last year’s 76th rally estimate of 463,000, to approaching the average attendance of 500,000 to 600,000.
Tom Horan, Rapid City region operations engineer with the South Dakota Department of Transportation, said estimates based on informal surveys of businesses who take reservations from rally visitors indicated a smaller rally this year.
“The lowest numbers I’ve heard is that it will be even less than last year,” Horan said. ”The highest numbers I’ve heard is that it will be less than an average year.”
He added: “We are not expecting a large crowd this year.”
